Office 2011 for Mac installs some of its dependent components in System areas. Frequently, after an operating system update, this release of Office for Mac will stop working. The solution is to completely remove it per Microsoft instructions, and reinstall it — followed by all updates through 14.7.7 (Fall 2017). Have your Office 2011 for Mac license key available before embarking on this mission.
Description of the security update for Office for Mac 2011 14.7.7: September 12, 2017 This security update resolves vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office that could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted Office file. Recently I had just upgraded my mac, and have held onto my product key from years ago to put into any new computer (like this current situation). I re-downloaded Office 2011, version 14.7.7 (last stable update). It accepted my key and everything, the software is on my computer, but accompanied. Before you install the Office for Mac 2011 14.7.7 update, make sure that you have Office for Mac 2011 14.1.0 or a later version installed on your computer. Also, make sure that the computer is running Mac OS X 10.5.8 or a later version of the Mac OS X operating system.
Microsoft never tested Office 2011 for Mac against macOS High Sierra 10.13, and neither recommends it, nor supports it after Oct 2017. Microsoft recommends updating to the latest version of Office 2016 for Mac which they do support.
